Lifesaving grants in Collierville classrooms

When you think about grant materials entering classrooms, you may picture math games, PE equipment or a new set of books. We were blown away by these teachers’ requests for lifesaving materials. It was a no-brainer to provide these grants that have a significant impact on both students and staff. Keep reading to learn how these teachers and students prepare to step in and help during emergencies.

Grab and go safety backpacks

Crosswind teachers received 50 new grab-and-go safety backpacks filled with first aid and emergency equipment. The previous medical bags were in a duffel style, making them harder to store and transport. The new, sleek backpacks are much easier for teachers to carry around supplies or grab on the go. The bags feature many compartments to organize all needed materials better, ensuring teachers know where everything is and can quickly access it in an emergency. This enhances the safety and well-being of every individual at the school.

Clinic corner

Collierville High students interested in entering the medical or emergency response fields can now practice taking blood pressure and temperature, as well as assessing vision and ears with a new Welch Allyn Series 777 Integrated Wall Diagnostic System. The corner of the health science classroom has been transformed into a “clinic corner” for students to simulate what they would see in a real-world clinical setting. Learning these basic skills, like taking blood pressure, will give them a leg up when they enter the pre-medical path after graduation.

Lifesaving lab

Students in the medical therapeutics class at Collierville High are learning CPR. New kits provided by CEF include four adult mannequins, four infant mannequins, bag valve masks and mock AEDs. Students are being taught how to use each item in the kit effectively and are learning how to perform CPR on all ages. This is great not only for the school but also for the broader Collierville community now that many students are trained in lifesaving skills. The class also teaches students about emergencies so they can feel more calm and prepared if an emergency happens.

Students and staff are better prepared to help in emergency situations in schools and the community with lifesaving skills like these. If you're interested in supporting future grants, consider making a donation to CEF.
