Spring is the perfect time of year to highlight the science-specific grants impacting Collierville classrooms. Science Education Day and National Science Appreciation Day are both celebrated in March, and Citizen Science Month is not far behind in April. Scientific knowledge is something that can be continuously expanded upon, as new discoveries are constantly being made. Here are just a few of the science materials being added into lesson plans around Collierville.
Exploring outer space
Every year, Schilling Farms first grade students look forward to Space Week. The week is filled with space-related learning and activities between the ELA and science classes. With a new grant from CEF, the first grade classrooms will be transformed into a space-themed learning environment. Students will be surrounded by visually captivating and interactive elements that stimulate their curiosity, deepen their understanding of space-related topics and foster a genuine excitement for the exploration of the cosmos. The classes received space posters, infographics and a tabletop planetarium for a multi-sensory learning experience. By combining visual, auditory and kinesthetic elements, the students will develop a more comprehensive understanding of space-related concepts.
Working in groups
With the “STEM-tastic minds want to know” grant at Schilling Farms Elementary, group projects are encouraged! CEF granted the school logic puzzles to help develop students’ critical thinking, problem-solving, patience, teamwork and engagement skills. When students work together on logic puzzles, they must communicate their ideas, share task responsibilities and work together to solve the problems. It’s a great way for students to brush up on their social skills, science expertise and problem-solving abilities all at once.
Reading non-fiction books
Tara Oaks Elementary is updating its library with brand new non-fiction science books. The new collection will include current, engaging and age-appropriate resources for students. These new books will inspire curiosity, support STEM education and provide students with accurate and contemporary scientific knowledge. It’s also a fun way to combine two subjects – reading and STEM. When students are curious about a scientific topic, they can check out these new books and expand upon their reading comprehension skills.
