A peek at physical education classes in Collierville Schools

When you think of a typical PE class, dodgeball, basketball or tag may come to mind. Educators in Collierville Schools always think outside the box, and the physical education teachers are no exception. We’ve seen many PE-related grants come through throughout the years, but these three stood out to us as some of the most impactful and unique requests we’ve seen. CEF looks to fund grant requests that will impact many students and have a long-term effect, and we believe the following grants will do precisely that!

Pickleball

As the fastest-growing sport for the past five years, pickleball is a popular pastime for many. The sport helps with agility, balance and hand-eye coordination, making it useful for people of all ages. Thanks to a CEF grant, Sycamore Elementary students and staff are using brand-new pickleball equipment, including paddles, nets, floor tape and a cart to hold the supplies. Students can embrace their competitive spirit during PE class and participate in pickleball tournaments. After school hours, staff use the equipment to practice their skills and serve up friendly matches.

Badminton

All freshmen at Collierville High are required to take a wellness class. To help expand the curriculum, the wellness teachers thought badminton would be a great addition. Like pickleball, badminton helps increase agility and hand-eye coordination. CEF was happy to assist in granting the materials that would impact the entire freshman class and the upperclassmen who are also required to take a lifetime sports class.

Disc Golf

You will most likely find students inside the school gym during a typical PE class. Collierville High teacher Gareth Munro wanted to incorporate an activity students could enjoy outdoors, and he thought disc golf would be the perfect fit. With new disc golf baskets and starter sets of frisbees, students eagerly set out to learn the new activity. Not only is disc golf great for a cardio workout, but it also supports socialization. The students enjoy a break from sitting at their desks and soak up the beautiful Collierville weather while competing in disc golf challenges with their peers.
